DESCRIPTION:Während sich die Literatur- und Sozialgeschichte in erster Lin

agt die Medien- und Leseszenenforschung auch nach dem Verhältnis der Lekt

SUMMARY:Ecologies of Mind in the Cold War
DESCRIPTION:A researcher examines the radioactive imprint of marine algae.
Film still: Searching for Strontium-90 (1968\, dir. Hryhorii Kokhan\, the
Kyiv Studio of Popular Science Film)\\r\\nAmid today’s geopolitical turm
oil\, armed violence\, and information warfare\, parallels could be drawn
to the charged global tension and ideological polarization of the Cold War
. Since the advent of the nuclear age\, militarized nationalist and (neo-)
colonial regimes have rarely relied on ideological agitation alone. Rather
\, they are characterized by the use of data processing and communication
technologies for mobilizing\, extracting\, analyzing\, and manipulating in
formation and collective affects: a form of subjectivation dependent on co
mplex media environments that are neither exclusively civil or military\,
commercial or public\, epistemic or governmental. This interdisciplinary c
onference seeks to explore such “ecologies of mind” and their shaping
of the psychologized self during the Cold War. \\r\\nResponding to the mo
ment of charged geopolitical tensions\, ideological polarization\, and tec
hnocratic rationalities\, psychologist and anthropologist Gregory Bateson
coined the notion of “ecology of mind” to account for a distributed su
bjectivity that resists a mechanistic understanding. Drawing on the transd
isciplinary language of cybernetics\, as well as from anthropology\, psych
ology\, evolutionary biology\, and information theory\, Bateson described
cognitive and psychic processes as embedded within—and in constant feedb
ack with —the broader social systems of information exchange. In his 197
2 anthology Steps to an Ecology of Mind\, he remarked:\\r\\n“Freudian p
sychology expanded the concept of mind inwards to include the whole commun
ication system within the body—the automatic\, the habitual\, and the va
st range of unconscious process. What I am saying expands mind outwards. A
nd both of these changes reduce the scope of the conscious self.”\\r\\nA
ccording to this vision\, the organic and inorganic worlds\, the tangible
and the discursive\, the social and the political\, as well as the technol
ogical and the aesthetic constitute an environment intertwined with the se
lf that expands the mind and decenters the subject. This recursive epistem
ology foregrounds context instead of atomization\, feedback instead of lin
ear causalities.\\r\\nUpsetting the limited focus on Bateson’s immediate
sphere of activity\, we welcome research on parallel and intersecting pro
jects across disciplines and political boundaries that share a common orie
ntation toward the subjectivity as distributed\, relational\, and ecologic
al. Rather than casting Bateson as an anomaly within Cold War rationality\
, this conference asks how his ecological approach was itself situated wit
 hin a broader discursive\, political\, social\, and techno-scientific envi
ronments. In this way\, it invites to decenter Bateson’s inquiry through
various related and simultaneous investigations into the environments of
the self––namely\, the ecologies of mind––in the Cold War.\\r\\nSp

DESCRIPTION:The workshop positions provenance as a bilateral and dialogic p

”\\r\\nIn her presentation\, Annet Dekker will examine the sustainabilit

ownership becomes relational rather than proprietary\, unsettling legal\,

capabilities and potential risks of AI models. They range from multiple-ch

Within the AI industry\, benchmarks have long been relied upon as valuable

by AI. In her talk\, Dr Maria Eriksson (European Centre for Algorithmic Tr
